The second season features the return of several Hill House actors portraying new characters, including Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, and Kate Siegel. On April 10, 2017, Netflix announced that it had ordered a 10-episode adaptation of the classic horror novel The Haunting of Hill House, with Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy as executive producers, and Amblin Television and Paramount Television as co-production companies. In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their children - Steven "Steve", Shirley "Shirl", Theodora "Theo", Luke, and Eleanor "Nell" - move into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they have to stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after tragedy strikes again, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House has affected each of them. The Haunting of Hill House is an effective ghost story whose steadily mounting anticipation is just as satisfying as its chilling payoff.
Timothy Hutton as Hugh
Pedretti will play Dani, the governess at the eponymous estate, who – per the traditional story of The Turn of the Screw – has been tasked with caring for a pair of young orphan siblings who fall under the possession of ghosts. Nell kills herself in the show’s pilot, and it’s her death that brings the surviving siblings together again to battle their demons–more physically this time. Via flashback, we see the Crains as children in Hill House–where they experience ghostly encounters–and as adults, where it’s clear the house represents a sort of PTSD experience, those visions still creeping into their psyches. They latched onto the grieving, pained Crains and found hope in their tragic story. It’s a story that, a year on, is still inspiring fan art, Twitter threads, and personal conversations. The Haunting of Hill House has carved out its own cult legacy–one that is sure to multiply in the years to come, as new folks discover it on Netflix, or purchase the new director’s cut edition on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Welcome to the Flanaverse: The Mike Flanagan Collection
Jackson’s plot follows a team of paranormal investigators sent to “prove” the existence of ghosts in a supposedly haunted, desolate New England manor. Flanagan’s version rewrote and reinterpreted characters, weaving them into a new fable about a family called the Crains and their inherited, generational trauma. Upon release, even those with their Jackson-purist pitchforks had to shut up; the series debuted to strong reviews and positive early word, and eventually became one of the most talked-about series of the year. The first series, titled The Haunting of Hill House, is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. In addition to the great writing, directing, and producing that Mike Flanagan delivered, each actor in the series found a way to resonate with everyone at least once throughout their appearance. During those times when you were trying to follow the storyline or keep track of all of the hidden ghosts wandering about the mansion, it may have been easy to miss the fact that you've probably seen all of the characters from the show in other roles, too.

McKenna Grace played the young Theodora Crain.
But however that season turns out, it’s clear that Hill House will remain a classic unto itself… where we can forever walk together, in the night… in the dark. Despite the show’s grueling subject matter and enveloping terror, part of its lasting appeal is in its re-watchability. That layered storytelling wasn’t even something the cast was necessarily aware of. In fact, Jackson-Cohen admitted that one of the show’s biggest hooks– its use of background ghosts to establish dread–wasn’t something they knew about ahead of time. All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events.
Netflix favorite and Game of Thrones alum Michiel Huisman stars as Steven all grown up, who has found success writing novels about his family's horrifying experience at Hill House and other paranormal peculiarities around the country. His decision to air his family's dirty secrets to the world — and largely deny that any actual haunting ever happened — results in bad blood between him and his siblings. Hush's Kate Siegel plays the grown-up version of Theo, who is just as prickly as she was in childhood. Armed with a rotating pair of gloves, Theo keeps herself guarded from everyone and everything, except for the troubled kids she works with as a child psychologist. Actor Julian Hilliard, who appeared in the film Never Goin' Back prior to this role, plays young Luke Crain.
Paxton Singleton played the young Steven Crain.
One filmmaker who understands (and has mastered) this better than most working today is Mike Flanagan, the creator of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, which is his upcoming 2021 Netflix TV series that is set to premiere in September. A year ago, Netflix was courting controversy with its adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s seminal horror novel, The Haunting of Hill House. Trailers told us the series–created and directed in its entirety by Mike Flanagan–would be a grand departure.

However, there's not much of a chance that the third "season" of The Haunting of Hill House will come out next October, due to coronavirus-related delays. If you were one of the people who wanted to see Jordane Christie really shine in his role as Nell's sweet and caring husband, you were probably caught off guard when he tragically died too soon. Poppy Hill got the Crain clan into plenty of trouble during their time living in the Hill House, but Catherine Parker has been impressing casting directors for over a decade now.

They aren’t super-long episodes, but they shade in the world with a little more detail, and a little more Shirley Jackson dialogue. The novel has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 and again in 1999, both times under the title The Haunting. The 1963 version is a relatively faithful adaptation and received critical praise. The 1999 version, considerably different from the novel and widely panned by critics, is an overt fantasy horror in which all the main characters are terrorized and two are killed by explicitly supernatural deaths.

Together, their ghosts solve supernatural mysteries that no one else can, but not without the help of psychic Crystal and her neighbor Niko. The next series in the Sandman universe, the Dead Boy Detectives, is now streaming on Netflix. Read on to learn all about the Dead Boy Detectives cast, including who plays Edwin Payne, Charles Rowland, Crystal Palace, and more. In November 2019, per Bloody Disgusting, word was made public the Craven estate was now looking for Nightmare on Elm Street pitches for potential movies or TV series. Instead of using real authentic footage, the trailer featuring Millie Bobby Brown's face overlayed on the faces of several characters from other Nightmare on Elm Street films. The trailer, which showed up on YouTube on April 18, sees Brown going up against the nightmare-inducing Freddy Krueger in what would be the 10th film in the storied horror franchise.
Since the ghosts of Hill House tend to leave Steven alone for the most part, we don't see much of him in the flashbacks, but he's just as protective over his younger siblings as Shirley is. The adult version of Luke is played by British actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who's appeared in everything from the 2010 rom-com Going the Distance to the recent Wizard of Oz-inspired miniseries Emerald City. When we check in with Luke years later, he's battling a serious meth addiction that likely stems from his childhood trauma. Now that The Haunting of Hill House has premiered on Netflix, it's time for you to start pondering a few things. But before you dig into those mysteries, you might want to familiarize yourself with the horror show's big group of characters.
I am the kind of person who prefers to keep expectations at bay while anticipating any upcoming movies or TV shows. However, as a huge fan of horror movies and horror TV shows, and especially as a fan of Mike Flanagan, I cannot help but assume that Midnight Mass could be the filmmaker’s next masterpiece. Victoria Pedretti is also returning, this time in a starring role, as Deadline reported, also confirmed by an announcement video.
